Dentures in Southbury

Sufficiently damaged teeth or missing teeth can bring insecurity to your smile and lead to many dental problems if not fixed. While there are several cosmetic solutions to missing teeth, one popular choice for people is dentures.

If you're considering having dentures made to restore your smile and give your dental health a leg up, read below to learn how denture dental services can be a good fit for you.

What are Dentures?

Dental ImplantsAre you missing teeth and/or dislike the inconvenience of a removable bridge or denture? If so, dental implants offer a functional and cosmetic solution that might be ideal for you. Implants deliver a sense of comfort and stability that conventional substitutes lack, so everything from speaking to eating becomes more natural.

Dentures are custom-built teeth that are secured in a framework made of acrylic resin, nylon, porcelain, resin, or metal while the fake teeth are made of acrylic resin or porcelain. Dentures come in several styles, but can be categorized into two types:

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures fill in the spaces left by teeth that have been lost. They are typically recommended by your dentist if the surrounding natural teeth are not strong enough to support dental bridges or when there are more than one or two teeth missing. The dentures are fitted to the gum line that they will sit on, but not permanently, and can be taken out for cleaning or while sleeping.

Full Dentures

Full dentures are also known as complete dentures and replace all of your natural teeth. They are fitted to either the top or bottom gum line and held in place by suction or along with an oral adhesive. These dentures are also removable for cleaning and for better comfort while sleeping.

Benefits to Patients

Dentures provide people with a wide variety of benefits, both cosmetic and for their dental health:

  • Speaking more easily and more clearly
  • Greater chewing and better digestion due to it
  • A return to foods that couldn't have been eaten before dentures
  • Helps to prevent facial collapse, when the skin begins sagging around the jawbones due to missing teeth causing muscle deterioration
  • Helps to maintain proper biomechanics of the head of the neck

It's important to note that chewing and speaking will take a little practice when you're new to dentures. Before digging into foods, start with softer foods and cut them into smaller pieces, chewing them slowly on both sides of the mouth. This will help you adjust to chewing with dentures in and allow a return to all the foods you like after some practice.

Is the Denture Placed After My Teeth Are Removed?

Dentures can be placed immediately following teeth removal and these are called "immediate dentures." They are used as a stopgap while the mouth heals from your teeth being extracted and are built custom to fit you. As the gums and mouth heal from the extraction, they will change and that will require working with your dentist to monitor the fit and comfort. Within the immediate dentures are soft re-liners, which are used to improve comfort and promote faster healing while providing gum conditioning.

Prior to having your teeth removed, Dr. Kest will take impressions and have dentures custom fitted for your mouth. After removing the teeth, the dentures are immediately placed in your mouth.
