What are the Benefits and Risks of Tooth Extraction?
Your dentist may recommend tooth extraction for the above reasons. While the procedure resolves an individual’s signs and symptoms, it also has risks, like all dental procedures.
Benefits of Tooth Extraction
- Pain relief
- Less chance of problems caused by wisdom teeth
- Removal of infection source
- Create space for braces
- Get a stronger and visually appealing smile with dental implants
Risks of Tooth Extraction
- Failure of blood to clot after extraction or dry socket
- Infection
- Nerve damage
- Fractures from tools used
- Damage to other teeth
- Bruising and swelling in the gum area
- Discomfort and pain from the injection site
- Incomplete recovery from pain or ache
- Drug reaction
- Slow recovery
We minimize risks at Dr. Kerry’s practice by interviewing individuals and knowing their relevant medical history. If a patient has any of the above risks, we mitigate them by customizing their case’s dental and medical plans.

How to Handle a Dental Emergency
While professional treatment is essential, knowing how to handle a dental emergency before reaching our practice can minimize damage and discomfort. Here are a few tips:
- Toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm water and use dental floss to remove any trapped debris. Avoid taking aspirin or placing it against the gums, as it can burn the tissue.
- Knocked-Out Tooth: Keep the tooth moist at all times. If possible, try to place the tooth back in the socket without touching the root. Alternatively, keep it in a cup of milk or water with a pinch of salt.
- Chipped Tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth to reduce swelling.
- Lost Filling or Crown: A temporary measure is to use sugarless gum or over-the-counter dental cement to cover the exposed area.
- Abscess: Use mild salt water rinses to relieve discomfort and draw out pus until you can see a dentist.

Most people dread going to the dentist, I certainly did, until I went to Dr Kest. Dr Kest has been competent and personable from day one. I look forward to going ever since I first started. Dr Kest has assembled a very talented, caring, dedicated team. Dr Tomasi is accomplished and attentive. Sandy is an excellent and patient hygienist. The office staff are courteous and efficient. In dentistry, Dr Kest, Dr Tomasi and team are the best of the best. Thank you.

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Kest and Dr. Tomasi for well over 30 years. The staff is friendly and the office is very nice and very clean. I’ve had lots of dental work there including crowns, veneers, and Invisalign. Dr. Tomasi is more recent in the office and she is extremely knowledgeable, caring , and gentle. I trust her judgment and care.

I’ve been a patient for more years than I can count! Always a pleasure coming to Dr.Kests office, from his office receptionists to dental hygienists… always kind and polite and they take the best care of you! Dr.Tomasi was our saving grace/angel who didn’t like the way my daughters canker sore looked and sent her to get another look… it was biopsies, and we found she had tongue cancer! Non smoker, and only 25 years old! They caught it quick enough where she is in remission and checked every 6 months by her surgeon! Amazing! I recommend Dr.Kest and Dr.Tomasi to everyone! 5 plus stars!
